Fatnas Island – Beautiful Sunset

Fatnas Island, nestled in the heart of Siwa Oasis, Egypt, is a tranquil haven surrounded by a picturesque palm grove and the serene waters of Lake Siwa. Often referred to as “Fantasy Island,” it offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island is famed for its breathtaking sunsets, which cast a golden hue over the palm trees and lake, creating a magical and otherworldly atmosphere. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant oranges, pinks, and purples, reflecting off the still waters. This enchanting spectacle makes Fatnas Island a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking to capture the essence of Siwa’s natural beauty.

Cleopatra Well

Take a refreshing dip in the warm water spring at the town center perfect for washing off the salt after visiting the salt lagoons. Further down the same road, you’ll find the famous Cleopatra’s Spring.  Despite some reviews from Quit and Go Travel describing it as dirty and overrated, I was pleasantly surprised and would

Shali Fortress

Shali Fortress, located at the heart of town. This fortress is an impressive site; once home to most of the oasis’s inhabitants, it was ruined during three days of heavy rain in 1926, which damaged the mud brick construction. Exploring the ruins, you’ll find remnants of old stairs and rooms that hint at the fortress’s former layout. The expansive site offers excellent views over the town. Some adjacent buildings and homes have been restored, including a mud brick mosque within the fortress walls.  These restored structures mostly serve as shops and guesthouses. The shops here are truly worth exploring, offering a relaxed, stress-free experience unlike any other bazaar in Egypt!

Salt Lagoons

Salt Lagoons

Surprisingly, Siwa’s salt lagoons were only discovered in 2011 as part of a large salt mine. Today, there are hundreds of these lagoons scattered throughout Siwa, and Egypt exports salt globally. With a salt concentration of over 95%, you literally cannot sink in these lagoons. If you do just one thing in Siwa, make sure it’s visiting these stunning salt lagoons. It’s an unparalleled, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the best part is—they’re free!
