Shali Fortress, located at the heart of town. This fortress is an impressive site; once home to most of the oasis’s inhabitants, it was ruined during three days of heavy rain in 1926, which damaged the mud brick construction. Exploring the ruins, you’ll find remnants of old stairs and rooms that hint at the fortress’s former layout. The expansive site offers excellent views over the town. Some adjacent buildings and homes have been restored, including a mud brick mosque within the fortress walls.
These restored structures mostly serve as shops and guesthouses. The shops here are truly worth exploring, offering a relaxed, stress-free experience unlike any other bazaar in Egypt!
